Physical Beauty – Our, not so nice, Cultural Landscape

Women, we are smart and intuitive.   Why do we act so irrational when it comes to the matter of physical beauty?  I want you to check out Killing Us Softly, a 7 minute youtube video based on a 1979 documentary by Jean Kilbourne.  She does a fantastic job of showing how through media and advertising campaigns we have been taught from the time we were little girls that in order to be lovable and desirable we must be flawless.

The same images of the perfect woman have been playing across the screens of our entire lives.  Billboards, magazines, TV, hallmark cards, computer pop-up ads…  the massive advertising campaign has been literally designed to coerce us into buying one crappy devastating belief: that no matter what you do, it is never enough and that you are inadequate.  You have been persuaded to feel guilty and ashamed that you are not perfect.  That, my friends, is what keeps us buying and consuming!

It is far from beautiful.  The word has been corrupted and perverted.  It is time that we reclaim beauty.

Doesn’t  dis-empowerment and the loss of self-esteem for an entire gender seem like a high price to pay to live in a free capitalist society… market?
