Importance of Image

Nothing is closer to you than your image. One of the most impressive things I remember from social theory is an argument that not even your closest family members rank as high in importance. So much so that you probably believe that your image is merely an extension of you, like a vital organ… your image is just who you are. Isn’t it?

Not exactly.

Just like in theatre and movies, image can be perceived as a tool.  In movies image is used to build a character. In personal life image is a tool for self-expression and social standing.   Image is comprised of external physical features, how you dress them with clothes, hair, make-up, plastic surgery etc. AND the personality or character traits that bubble up through those physical features or are cultivated in the case of an actor.

It is true in most cases  certain physical features and personality traits of an actor play a role in the image of their character, however sometimes the image of the character totally obscures and distorts the person that lies behind it.  One shining example is Charlize Theron’s transformation into Aileen Wuornos in the movie Monster.  Charlize Theron was completely unrecognizable behind the image of Aileen Wuornos.  Kodos to Charlize the transformation was complete and truly amazing.

What does this mean for the non actor? That you can shift your image to shift your mind.
